Punta Gorda CEB School Opens Learning Today English Reading Lab

Learning Today, Inc. has made their award-winning software to schools and organizations working with PIER. Punta Gorda is the first school to install the program.  What seems so easy to other countries is not so on our island.  Even if a school can find computers, they don't have funds for Internet access.  Our goal is to install Learning Tutor in the three pilot schools.  Elfreda Brooks has 3 computers, a room for the program, and an air-conditioner.  However, they don't have the $1000 to put in windows.  The other schools are starting from scratch.

An angel is needed!

BILINGUAL EDUCATION

Bilingual education preserves our island's English heritage and

provides language skills necessary for our tourism-based economy.

This year PIER formalized its relationship with the Department of Bilingual Education to assist with English and ESL teacher training and support. Three schools have been selected to pilot a bilingual curriculum which will use English as the core language for math and science classes. All other courses will continue to be taught in Spanish. PIER staff will work with the English-language teachers in these schools, as well as the current Intercultural Bilingual Education class on English language and teaching activities.

Thanks to amazing donations from USA school districts and Roatan Children's Fund, PIER can provide over 8,000 reading, math, and science English textbooks to teachers.

 PIER HAS TWO DREAMS:

1) We wish to form linkages with universities and teachers, in order to develop curriculum and provide high-level interactive teacher training.  Contact PIER for more information.

2) Create a BOOKMOBILE service, so that we can:

  • Provide daily contact with the teachers, reading stories to their students, and bringing the stories alive with arts & crafts projects, science experiments, and math puzzles.
  • Deliver books to schools without libraries
  • Take books and Story Time to outlying areas of the island for children who can't afford transportation to our center.

Contact Roatan Children's Fund for more information on how you can help bring a BOOKMOBILE to Roatan.  Click on the link to the right.
